Week 1 - Post 1: About Myself

Hi everyone my name is Taylor Caswell-Chen!  My hometown is Elk Grove, CA, and for those who don't know, Elk Grove is near Sacramento.  I am a first-year undergraduate student at the University of California, Berkeley and I plan on majoring in Business Administration, minoring in Energy Engineering, and possibly minoring in Music if I can fit all the classes that I need into my schedule.  I'm interested mostly in the finance and consulting sectors of business, and possibly international business as well, in addition to my interest in the renewable energy sector.  My long-term career goal is to have a job where I have a management or financial role in an energy company, one where I can apply my technical understanding of renewables to my work.  I plan to graduate in four years, and I hope to study abroad in either China or Taiwan so that I can learn to read, speak, and write Mandarin Chinese.
I am currently a member of the Cal Marching Band playing saxophone and I love to watch and play golf, although unfortunately I haven't had much time to do so recently.  My favorite TV shows are Suits, Game of Thrones, Big Bang Theory, Lie to Me, and The Voice.  In my free time I like to hang out with friends and perform community service related work, such as with the Berkeley Grant-a-Wish group, an organization that performs community service and raises money for the Make-a-Wish foundation.  I also enjoy playing Xbox 360 games including the Halo series, Call of Duty, and Bioshock.  My favorite movie of 2012 was Django Unchained and currently some of my favorite musical artists are Charlie ParkerKendrick Lamar, Tech N9ne, Maroon 5, Adele, John LegendDrake, and The Black Keys.  I'm looking forward to this semester!

  1. Studying abroad in Germany was hands down the best experience of my life - I hope you have the chance to do it! I am currently a business major here at Berkeley and I too am focusing in international business. Studying abroad is a great way to expand your knowledge of the way things work in different countries, not to mention getting to know and participate in different cultures. Best of luck!

    1. I agree completely, and I may be interested in international business as well. I cannot wait to study abroad and gain a better perspective on other cultures, in addition to a better perspective on my own life.

  2. I know of Elk Grove! I recently moved to the border of Elk Grove and it's hard to imagine growing up around there. Studying business administration has opened up my mind so I wish you luck in your pursuit of it.

  3. You seem to be very diverse, good luck on getting into Haas! I am currently in the business school and really enjoy it but also always recommend people to double major which I am doing with Media Studies.

  4. Thanks Brandon. I'm really excited about Haas, and a little nervous as well, but I agree that it seems very worthwhile to study more than just business. Out of curiosity, do you know how you plan to apply your Media Studies degree after graduation?

Have you taken any Mandarin classes yet? Cal's language classes are tough but they will give you good prep.

    1. Haha thanks. No I have not, but I plan to take the 1A/1B combo offered at Cal this summer. And yeah that's what I heard, but if it makes me a better speaker... :)
